Registry on whom I can call on for assistance in questions relating to Registry work is Mr. Lee-Jones, and it must in- -evitably tend to dishearten him if he is continually having

officers put over his head.

4.

I must again press upon Your Excellency

the necessity of severing the Registry from the ordinary service. The work requires long training, and cannot be affect- -ively done if it is taken up for a month or two, and then dropped. Duting the last 6 months the following officers have been proposed by Your Excellency for the post of Deputy Registrar: Mr. Melbourne, Mr. Orme, Mr. Woodcock, and now Mr. Wood. I am quite aware that as the system is worked at present there was practically no alternative: but the Registry would Again in strength, and the confidence of the profession and suitors in it would be increased, if some stability in the

appointments could be introduced.

I have etc.,

(sd.) F. T. Piggott,

Chief Justice.
